The sun had started to set, moving behind the hotel, casting long shadows on the water. Pink and orange streaked the sky, and slowly the lights on the pier flickered on. Falling asleep in each other’s arms after giving Violet a bottle at three, they’d slept for hours. Ava woke up confused.

“Where the heck am I?” she mumbled.

The dark room hid its identity, but then she heard cooing and an occasional whimper.

“Oh, poor baby,” she said, getting out of bed.

She picked up soft fabric off the floor and slipped it on over her head, smelling a manly fragrance that was probably Leon’s deodorant.

She tiptoed out of the bedroom so as not to disturb him, but it was unnecessary, he was sitting on a barstool, naked, feeding Violet.

“What time is it?” she asked, shielding her eyes from the light.

“You won’t believe this.”

“Try me.”

“It’s past six.”

“Well, whatever you did to me helped me get the best sleep I’ve had in a long time.”

That pleased him and he chuckled. “I agree. That was pretty fantastic. The first of many, I hope.”

“Should we pack up and get moving?” she asked. “Rush hour will be over soon.”

“I hate to go,” Leon admitted. “Next time we need to come prepared to stay the night.”

“You can stay at my house if you think it won’t cause a problem.”

“Do you have space in your garage for my truck? I’ll be considerate and let the folks know we aren’t coming home, but they don’t need to know why.”

“I have space for your truck,” she said. “This is pretty adventurous of you.”

“Is it? I don’t think so. I just want to be in your bed, and until I get my place, yours will have to do.”

“Oh, okay,” she replied, laughing. “At least you’re honest.”

“And I definitely don’t want you to see that bald guy again. The dentist.”

“No bald guy, or any guy. And you too. No other women.”

“None.”

They loaded the truck up for home, unhappy about leaving the hotel. “It’s so depressing to have to leave here.”

“This was fun,” Leon said. “Thank you again for suggesting it.”

He reached for her hand, and they rode home in contented silence. But once they arrived at Ava’s, that all went out the window.

“Now what do we do?” he asked. “I don’t want to be away from you.”

“Well, you’re going to stay, correct?”

“Yes, but then what?”

“You’ll go home for a few more days, and then you’ll work your work days, and when that’s done, you’ll move into your apartment. That will make a big difference.”

“I’ll just level with my parents.”

“Don’t do that, Leon. Everything is too new. You just started the job. Violet came into your life. You’re going to move in less than two weeks. They’ll think you’re reacting to stress.”

“Am I?”

“You could be. I’m hardly an appropriate choice for a girlfriend.”

“You’re the only choice,” he said. “And you’re right, I am stressed out.”

He grabbed her across the center console, kissing her like he had in the throes of passion. When he was finished, at least for that moment, he looked carefully into her eyes.
